Tribute to Icon Eddie Murphy

May 14, 2018

#MCM: Edward Regan Murphy aka Eddie Murphy. “My significance in film-and again I’m not going to be delusional – was that I’m the first black actor to take charge in a white world onscreen. That’s why I became as popular as I became.”– Eddie Murphy – Rolling Stone. October 26, 2011.

Mr. Murphy was not exaggerating. This legendary icon and trailblazer paved the way for Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Martin Lawrence, the Wayans and many comedic actors. He was a pure comedic genius on Saturday Night Live. Those characters, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson, Gumby, (I’m Gumby, dammit!) and more are forever etched both into our consciousness and the imaginary Comedy Hall of Fame.

Eddie Murphy is on my bucket list as a premiere actor I want to collaborate. Hence… THRONE!

I was just as captivated as everyone else to see the rivalry play out between King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) in the box office gold, Black Panther. Three or four years earlier, (See Copyright April 2015) my overactive imagination wondered, what if someone challenged, assuming now King Akeem of Zamunda, for the royal THRONE?

What if Akeem had a brother, he never knew he had? What if the two of them, though they lived completely separate lives, had their destinies forced by a near death-bed confession by a former Royal Bather?

You probably didn’t realize it in Coming to America, did you catch that either King Jaffe Joffer abused his authority or had secret royal booty calls? (To then Prince Akeem) “I thought you had sex with your Bathers. I know I do.”

In THRONE, the drama takes on a more edgy and complicated tone. It’s not your mama’s Coming to America. It’s a royal scandal. #MeTooZamunda

To Eddie Murphy: For all your groundbreaking characters and performances I’m disappointed the Academy hasn’t graced you with film’s highest honor by now. Yes, the golden statuette for Best Actor. I hope to change that. I see “Coming 2 America” is in pre-production. (Source: IMDB) Great! But Your Majesty, (King Akeem) watch your back. Your bastard brother, with the fury of Erik Killmonger, is coming for the THRONE! (Franchise)
